Uma grande área florestada ainda sem destinação está hoje à mercê do desmatamento ilegal, o que prejudica qualquer esforço de ordenamento territorial, desenvolvimento regional e, consequentemente, redução do desmatamento. A alocação dessas áreas em alguma categoria de floresta pública é portanto essencial para a conservação da Amazônia e o uso sustentável dos recursos da região.
