Neste documento, o Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia (IPAM), em colaboração com o Woods Hole Research Center, apresentam um breve resumo do contexto global do desmatamento na Amazônia e identificam as oportunidades atuais para se ordenar o uso de recursos naturais na região através do mercado global. As considerações explicitadas aqui são complementares àquelas relacionadas ao ordenamento da expansão da fronteira agrícola na Amazônia e apresentada em publicação do IPAM em 2004 (Alencar et al. 2004)
