O IPAM, juntamente com suas instituições parceiras: Conservação Internacional, Environmental Defense Fund, Woods Hole Research Center e The Nature Conservancy, produziu quatro documentos de posições comuns sobre aspectos da política de REDD. Este é sobre a posição comum sobre povos indígenas e comunidades locais e REDD+.

Os povos indígenas e comunidades locais estão envolvidos, ainda que de forma limitada, nas discussões sobre mudanças climáticas, tanto no nível nacional como internacional. No entanto, ainda existem lacunas de informação sobre a ameaça que o aquecimento global representa às suas comunidades. Existe uma necessidade de explorar como os mecanismos REDD+ impactarão povos indígenas e comunidades locais, como esses mecanismos assegurarão uma distribuição eqüitativa dos benefícios e respeitarão os seus direitos.
