China and Brazil have entered a new phase of bilateral cooperation in which trade, food security, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability are increasingly interconnected. Brazil has consolidated its position as China’s leading agricultural supplier, particularly for soybeans, corn, beef, and cotton, while Chinese demand has become increasingly linked to production, infrastructure, and land-use dynamics in Brazil. This interdependence means that the long-term stability of agricultural trade is also increasingly connected to the environmental integrity of major producing regions, particularly the Amazon and Cerrado.
At the same time, climate change, deforestation, and land-use pressures pose growing risks to agricultural production and supply-chain resilience. These challenges coincide with changes in China’s sustainability agenda, where traceability, green finance, environmental standards, and sustainable supply-chain management are becoming more prominent. The technical note argues that this convergence creates opportunities for Brazil and China to strengthen cooperation on traceability, sustainable agricultural intensification, technological innovation, and green investment, while addressing institutional and governance barriers that still limit implementation.
This technical note examines how these transformations are reshaping China-Brazil trade relations and explores pathways for moving from a predominantly commodity-based relationship toward a more sustainable, and resilient model of cooperation. It highlights opportunities to align traceability systems, expand production on already cleared and degraded lands, mobilize finance for low-carbon agriculture, and strengthen technological cooperation. Ultimately, the note considers how China and Brazil could use their partnership to advance a South-South model that combines food security, economic development, forest conservation, and shared environmental responsibility.
