With the aim of “moving from vision to action”, Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, president of COP30, is calling on the international community to take part in the “Global Task Force”, launched in a new letter published today (8).

The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference will be held in Brazil between November 10 and 21, in the city of Belém.

According to the document, the mobilization aims to “drive action and ambition, creating the conditions for a turning point in our fight against climate change”.

The letter encourages individuals and organizations to present “self-determined contributions” (similar to the NDCs – Nationally Determined Contributions – of the Paris Agreement), in the form of experiences and initiatives that can contribute to sustainably tackling climate challenges.

“The COP30 Presidency is extending an open invitation to all members of the human family: come as you are and as you can be. In the framework of the Global Task Force, everyone will be welcomed, regardless of their level of engagement, specialization or perspective,” the document says.

The debut of the “Global Task Force” will take place during the first UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Climate Week 2025, to be held in Panama City from May 19 to 23.

The letter is the first in a series of communications to mobilize the international community in the face of the climate emergency. The next topics to be addressed are the Agenda for Action; the formal negotiations of the UNFCCC; and the Leaders’ Summit.

Another launch highlighted in the document is the four Leadership Circles: (i) the “COP Presidents’ Circle”, (ii) the “Peoples’ Circle”, (iii) the “Finance Ministers’ Circle” and (iv) the “Global Ethical Balance Circle”. “Like waves forming and merging in a relentless current, these circles will flow together, channeling collective wisdom to generate renewal and evolution.”

The president also stressed the need for unity in the midst of geopolitical, socio-economic and environmental challenges to “(1) strengthen multilateralism and the climate change regime within the UNFCCC; (2) connect the climate regime to people’s real lives; and (3) accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement by stimulating actions and structural adjustments in all institutions that can contribute to this”.

The efforts would be aimed at “avoiding a potentially devastating chain reaction and instead triggering ‘chain actions’ towards exponential low-carbon and climate resilient solutions”.
