On Wednesday (19), during COP30 in Belém, IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute) and ACEF (China Environmental Federation) signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) to promote the exchange of knowledge on forest protection and climate change.
Under the agreement, the two institutions undertake to share information and promote high-level dialogues with governments, the private sector, the financial sector, civil society and academia. The partnership will last at least two years and involves taking results to COP31 and BRICS meetings.
“Brazil has food production, China has technology. Both countries need each other. And strengthening the Global South involves exchanging experiences in various sectors. The two nations need to be together,” said André Guimarães, executive director of IPAM and special envoy of the COP30 presidency for civil society.
ACEF is a federation of environmental organizations in China with years of experience in implementing the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) at local and regional levels, promoting rapprochement with various actors for environmental protection around the world.
“This cooperation means that, in the future, China and Brazil will have a strong connection. We can recognize many of the NGOs that are involved in forest protection and introduce a lot of knowledge and experience from Brazil,” said Yao Ni, from ACEF.
IPAM was in the Asian country in June 2025 on a Brazilian civil society mission to strengthen Brazil-China cooperation in scientific research with a focus on conservation, agriculture and green trade.
The partnership with ACEF is the third signed since then, preceded by an agreement with the North-South Institute for Sustainable Development and Jiliang University. The agreements have common objectives, with different approaches, aimed at research cooperation in the two countries to boost climate action and public policies.
