André Guimarães, executive director of IPAM (Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia) is taking part this Thursday, April 24, in “GLF FORESTS 2025: Defining the next decade of action“, an event organized by the Global Landscape Forum in Bonn, Germany. The event will discuss the preservation of forests and the integration between productive areas and native vegetation, creating resilient, low-emission landscapes that protect environmental services and agricultural productivity.
The Global Landscape Forum is a multi-sectoral organization that supports the development of productive and climate-resilient landscapes in the countryside. The group has also been active in building financing tools for forest protection and energy transition strategies. The forum is currently made up of more than 10,000 organizations from 185 countries.
“The tropical agriculture of the future will need to have native vegetation as part of its production process. We’re going to have to find ways of integrating these two scenarios as a way of protecting Brazil’s agriculture from climate change. This is a paradigm shift because the current practice is to remove vegetation in order to grow crops,” says Guimarães.
During the event, IPAM’s initiatives aimed at reducing deforestation in the countryside will be presented, such as CONSERV, which pays rural producers for preserving areas of vegetation that could be legally cleared. Since 2020, the program has signed 21 contracts with rural producers in Mato Grosso and Pará, preventing the emission of more than 2 million tons of CO2 and protecting more than 20,000 hectares of vegetation.
The GALO (Global Assessment from Local Observations) project will also be highlighted. The initiative investigates the relationship between agriculture and the preservation of natural vegetation within the Amazon and Cerrado biomes and the impact of factors such as climatic conditions and agricultural productivity. The research is conducted at the Tanguro Research Station, an open-air research laboratory coordinated by IPAM in Querência, Mato Grosso.
