Organizations from Brazil and China met in an online event on Tuesday 16 to strengthen cooperation in the field of environmental scientific research with a view to COP30. Representatives from both countries discussed possibilities for advancing joint work for conservation and sustainable development during and after the conference.

More than 40 institutions were present, including the third sector, universities, NGOs and research institutes from Brazil and China. The event also featured video messages from Ana Toni, executive director of the COP30 Presidency, and Yang Jun, director of the Environmental Education and Communication Center of China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

“We are thrilled to connect again to continue the conversations we started in June, in person, while visiting Chinese institutions in Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. Meetings like this are opportunities to deepen Brazil-China scientific cooperation in favor of nature conservation and sustainable development,” said André Guimarães, executive director of IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute), at the opening of the event.

Acting as the COP30 Presidency’s special envoy for civil society, he added: “Less than two months before COP30, both countries’ solutions are gaining more attention in the global climate debate. It is our role to contribute, with recommendations based on nature, technology and science, so that Brazil and China continue to lead the way in tackling climate change.”

Zhou Fei, Head of Programs at WWF China, also greeted the participants at the start of the program. “This is a heart-to-heart dialog. We must raise multi-stakeholder collaboration and synergies between sectors, suggesting best practices for the transformation of the global supply chain. Climate change is a challenge for humanity, and Brazil and China must come up with solutions within the framework of South-South cooperation. COP30, in this sense, is not just a climate conference, but a historic opportunity. Therefore, this meeting is perfectly timed to unite partnerships in both countries,” he said.

Also speaking at the beginning of the event, Isabel Nepstad, CEO of BellaTerra, recalled the China Mission of Brazilian environmental organizations to the country in June 2025. During their visit to the Asian country, representatives from six Brazilian organizations met with universities, NGOs, associations and members of the Chinese government. “Holding this event keeps up the pace of action between organizations in Brazil and China, and for us at BellaTerra it’s a joy to be part of this process. We look forward to contributing to more exchanges,” he said.

After institutional presentations about Belém, the program moved on to an open discussion in which participants shared ideas and plans for events at COP30 that will address the Brazil-China relationship in the environmental context. Beyond the conference, the group also raised possibilities for future actions, with a view to 2026 and beyond, for the development of joint work and research.

The event “COP30 and Beyond: Brazil-China Sustainable Pathways” was organized by IPAM in partnership with ICV (Instituto Centro de Vida), Plataforma Cipó, Instituto O Mundo Que Queremos and Imazon (Instituto do Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amazônia).
