Last Tuesday (12), a workshop coordinated by SEMA (Maranhão’s Environment Secretariat), with technical support from IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute), discussed the PPCDQ (Action Plans for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation and Burning in the State of Maranhão) monitoring plan.
The public policy is aimed at reducing deforestation and fires, enabling the sustainability and resilience of Maranhão’s territory.
The event discussed the monitoring strategy aimed at prioritizing actions capable of reversing the advance of deforestation and environmental degradation in Maranhão, aimed at guiding and improving solutions that reconcile environmental conservation and strengthening the productive sector.
“Monitoring is important both to understand the paths and progress, but also to correct and provide transparency for the state and civil society about the actions being implemented to reduce deforestation and forest fires,” says Jarlene Gomes, a researcher at IPAM.
The PPCDQ monitoring plan is strategic for making progress on the goals of reducing deforestation and forest fires through structuring actions that guarantee transparency in public policy, strengthening the state’s credibility for access to new climate financing opportunities.
The workshop was attended by the GPTI (Permanent Interinstitutional Working Group), made up of representatives from public bodies, research institutions, civil society and partner organizations.
Participants were able to collaborate on the implementation and strategy of the plan, presenting suggestions and aligning responsibilities for monitoring, with a view to strengthening and making the implementation of actions more efficient.
At the workshop, institutional representatives from Acre shared their experience of the challenges, directions and implementation of monitoring their state plan.
“Listening to the participation of Acre, which is already on its third implementation of the PPCDQ, brings us a case of success, showing us positive experiences, with opportunities that we can bring here to our state,” says Orquelina Costa, assistant secretary for environmental resources.
Maranhão’s PPCDQ presents the state’s strategic guidelines, targets and actions with the aim of reducing deforestation and degradation of native vegetation, as well as controlling forest fires.
