IPAM Signs Agreement with Fudan University in China on Air Quality and Fire

IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute) signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at Fudan University in China, with the aim of facilitating the exchange of information on environmental science, climate change, and air quality monitoring, with a focus on the impact of wildfires.

The document was signed during the 2026 China-Brazil Youth Dialogue on Sustainable Development in Hangzhou by Qing Li, a professor at the university, and André Guimarães, executive director of IPAM.

“We are always seeking scientific collaborations and the exchange of experiences to deepen our understanding of wildfires and accelerate the development of solutions that reduce degradation, thereby contributing to the preservation of native vegetation, which is so crucial in the context of climate change in which we live,” comments Guimarães.

“The agreement strengthens international scientific cooperation on issues such as climate change, air pollution, and ecosystem conservation to understand and address the environmental challenges facing the Amazon, the Cerrado, and the Pantanal,” stated Vanessa Soares Ribeiro, a researcher at IPAM.

As part of the agreement, Akram Muhammad Adeel, a student at Fudan University, is in Brazil collecting particulate matter samples in areas of the Cerrado and the Amazon, which will be used in future publications involving researchers from both institutions.

The memorandum provides that, over the next five years, the Chinese university and IPAM will support the dissemination of academic findings through publications, conferences, reports, and other means.

The event aimed to enable the university to explore ways for young people to participate in cooperation for sustainable development.

“In the context of global change, China and Brazil are among the world’s most important nations for sustainable development. Our joint research on forest fires, climate change, and environmental health is essential, not only for understanding the current trajectory of global change but also for identifying the solutions that our two countries—and the world—urgently need,” said Li Qing, a professor at Fudan University.
