In its 30-year history, IPAM (Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia) has participated in all the climate conferences as an observer of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). At COP30, which takes place in Belém in November this year, the institute will bring its legacy of science and solutions.

During the approximately 100 events and discussions in which it will participate, IPAM will reinforce the role of native vegetation conservation as one of the main solutions for mitigating the impacts of climate change, involving the people who live in and from the forest. Its activities will take place in four main spaces: Blue Zone, Green Zone, Casa Balaio and Agri Zone. The full agenda is constantly being updated and can be consulted here.

The topics to be presented by specialists from the institute are: Fire Management and Monitoring; Climate Financing; Agriculture and Food Production; Undesignated Public Forests; Climate Adaptation and Resilience; Social Tipping Points; Climate Justice; Monitoring Greenhouse Gas Emissions; Bioeconomy; Biodiversity; Traditional Peoples and Communities.

Global South in evidence

Among the highlights are events in partnership with Chinese organizations to strengthen multilateralism and food security in conjunction with nature conservation. The main discussion will take place at an official COP30 side event in the Blue Zone on November 10.

On November 12, Casa Balaio will have a day dedicated to Sino-Brazilian partnerships in dialogue with the Global South at the event “Forests, agriculture and the green economy in the Global South” (click here to register and here to see the program).

Amazonia 2050

Another highlight is the presentation of the “2050 Strategy” on November 11 at the Amazon Hub, the pavilion of the Interstate Consortium of the Legal Amazon in the Blue Zone. The long-term plan brings together actions and priorities already underway in the states of the Legal Amazon, with a focus on the sustainable development of the Amazon region by 2050.

Day of activities

On November 13, Casa Balaio will host a day of activities promoted by IPAM, such as the 7th edition of Proteja Talks, with the theme “Traditional Fire Use in Times of Change”. The event promotes the exchange of experiences in the conservation of protected areas, bringing together traditional peoples and communities, leaders, managers and activists.

On the same day, cyclists from the TransCerrado scientific expedition will share their experiences for the preservation of the Cerrado and there will be a screening of the institute’s audiovisual productions throughout the day at “Cine IPAM”. These include the documentary “Manaus Extrema”, which portrays the impacts of the Rio Negro drought, and “O Chamado do Cacique: Herança, Terra e Futuro”, which highlights the trajectory of chief Raoni Metuktire.

IPAM will also take part in the “International Forum on Family Farming and Traditional Communities: Adaptive Solutions for the Populations of the Global South”, to be held at the Agri Zone, an Embrapa space, between November 13 and 17.
