The book “Challenges for the sustainability of Brazilian agriculture: governance, inclusion and innovation” was launched on Monday (18) at UnB (University of Brasilia). The publication has contributions by the executive director of IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute), André Guimarães, and the Institute’s senior researcher, Paulo Moutinho.

Together with Marcelo Stabile, a former IPAM researcher, they wrote a specific chapter on initiatives for the private sector and for the various players in civil society, science, government and agencies, who must work in an integrated manner on this set of challenges facing agriculture. In order to play a proactive role in looking to the future of agriculture, the authors encourage a commitment to eliminating deforestation from production chains and greater integration of the various production links so that the cost of reducing deforestation is diluted.

“Agriculture is facing a challenge all over the world, and it’s no different in Brazil. Because of climate change, it’s going to have to adapt,” says André Guimarães, who adds that there are various methodologies for making these adjustments, such as regenerative agriculture or actions that have been carried out in the recent past and which have had an effect, in which the private sector has had a significant responsibility to stop financing agriculture that deforests.

According to Paulo Moutinho, “this is one of the few contributions that brings together private sector initiatives for the agenda on sustainability issues in agriculture”.

The launch event featured a presentation by Ana Flávia Granja e Barros Platiau, a professor at the Institute of International Relations at the University of Brasilia, comments by Camila Dias de Sá, a researcher at Insper Agro Global, and moderation by Niels Søndergaard, assistant professor at the Institute of International Relations at the University of Brasilia, and participating authors Paulo Moutinho, senior researcher at IPAM, Fernando Sampaio, director of sustainability at ABIEC, and Cristina Leme Lopes, senior research manager of the Climate Law and Governance program at CPI Brasil (Climate Policy Initiative).
