The Amazon 2050 Regional Strategy was launched today (10) at the CAL (Consortium of the Legal Amazon) pavilion at COP30. The event was attended by governors and secretariats, as well as representatives from IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute) and CAL.
Under the coordination of the Consortium and with the support of IPAM, the document is established as a central instrument of convergence to guide territorial planning and the Brazilian ecological transition, based on science, innovation, technology and federative cooperation. Long-term planning includes public policies, international cooperation and sustainable investments. This strategic approach, which incorporates the various state and local actors, aims to make the Amazon the hub of the Brazilian and global ecological transition, guaranteeing the legitimacy and effectiveness of actions throughout the territory.
CAL2050 Platform
The CAL2050 Platform was also presented, an integrated tool that centralizes geospatial data, dynamic dashboards and information on the 9 states of the Brazilian Amazon. The platform is connected to official federal and state databases, making it possible to track indicators and monitor the region’s contribution to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
“The Amazon is very large: it corresponds to around 63% of the national territory and has different realities. But there are common agendas that we are trying to reconcile. In this context, we are converging through a single platform that facilitates those who wish to connect with the Legal Amazon Consortium’s agenda and with the region to facilitate access to information,” said Helder Barbalho, governor of Pará, during the event.
“The platform will be available free of charge and will be a full plate for states and investors, whether for planning carbon credits, restoration, commercial investments or agribusiness,” added Marcelo Britto, executive secretary of the Legal Amazon Consortium and COP30 Special Envoy for the Amazon states.
Strategic themes
The Amazon 2050 Regional Strategy is organized into six strategic themes: Territorial Integration, Sustainable Production Systems, Nature-Based Solutions and Ecosystem Services, Energy Transition, Social Inclusion and Resilience.
“This is a long-term vision of sustainable development where the guidelines for the economic transformation of the Amazon at a time when sustainable development is important, but also the socio-economic development of the people who live in the region,” explains Gabriela Savian, IPAM’s Director of Public Policy.
The reality of the states
The governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, said that the strategy is the result of seven years. “We came up with a compilation of ideas that were added to by the secretaries of various areas through sectoral chambers. The document not only serves as a guide, but also so that Brazil and the world understand the reality of what we are experiencing and thinking about the reality of the Amazon.”
“As well as serving as self-knowledge for the states of the Legal Amazon and for empowering managers, indigenous and community leaders, it will also be a source of information for financiers who want to understand our realities and support us with measures suited to our needs,” explained the governor of Amapá, Clécio Luís.
For Francisca Arara, Acre’s secretary for indigenous peoples, the launches contribute to governance and synergy between the states. “We need to be up to date with the market and we need to do this with a lot of transparency, respecting everyone’s situation. Considering the increase in extreme weather events, we need more and more initiatives like this to guarantee food security and water quality, not only with the support of public funds, but also private ones.”
