Multisectoral cooperation between Brazil and China was the subject of an event at the Legal Amazon Consortium pavilion on Monday (17), in the COP30 Blue Zone. During the full-day program, experts and representatives of the national and sub-national governments of both countries took part.
The event was organized by IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute) in partnership with the Brazilian Amazon Consortium, the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment and ACEF (All-China Environmental Federation).
“Brazil and China are very important countries for driving environmental change in the world. The main message of today’s event is to learn, share and identify opportunities to act together,” said André Guimarães, executive director of IPAM and special envoy of the COP30 presidency for civil society.

“It’s a great honor to join friends from Brazil to discuss sustainable development. Last year, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Brazil-China relationship and the joint declaration of both countries for a shared future offers a strategic vision for cooperation and climate action. Let this event be a platform for dialogue, bringing people together for concrete collaborations on forest protection, air quality, energy transition and agriculture,” said Shidong Yan, director of the Environmental Communication and Education Center of China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment.
Forests and infrastructure were the topic of the first panel of the day, which was followed by a discussion on air quality monitoring and green cities. In the afternoon, energy transition, agriculture and artificial intelligence permeated the debates.
The deputy governor of the state of Acre, Mailza Assis, took part in the event. “Brazil and China have been building a relationship based on trust and common purposes for five decades. We need to think together about solutions that combine economic development and technological cooperation. In this context, cooperation is essential to guarantee the integrity of the Amazon and the people who live there,” she said.
Marcello Brito, executive secretary of the Brazilian Amazon Consortium, recalled that China buys almost 30% of the commodities exported by Brazil. “In terms of numbers, the importance of this partnership needs no comment. But beyond that, we’re talking about the friendship between a young country like Brazil and China, which has thousands of years of experience, knowledge and culture to share. We have a lot to learn”.
Ni Yao, director of ACEF’s strategic cooperation department, pointed out that the event brought together “the most relevant developing countries in the current context of the planet”. He added: “This year ACEF is going to establish strategic cooperation with IPAM. We want to work together with IPAM and everyone present to create a sustainable future between humanity and nature.”
IPAM will sign a memorandum of understanding with the All-China environmental federation on the 19th, at the China pavilion in the COP30 Blue Zone, starting at 9am.
