Betty Irene Moore passed away on Tuesday (12), at the age of 95, surrounded by her family and in peace, according to a statement issued by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, created by Betty and her husband, Gordon, in the 2000s. IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute) pays tribute and highlights Betty’s legacy in global climate and environmental philanthropy.

Support for research and projects in the area of climate change is still incipient: according to a report by the ClimateWorks Foundation, only 1.6% of philanthropic donations in 2022 were directed towards climate. Having had a special relationship with nature since she was a child, Betty has made conservation one of her priorities.

“May the life, memory and work of Betty Moore be remembered and celebrated. For more than twenty years, her work has fostered science and action for the benefit of the planet,” said André Guimarães, IPAM’s executive director.

At the institute, the initiatives supported by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation cover various areas, producing science and solutions for conservation and sustainable development, as well as training researchers and working towards the creation of the Legal Amazon Consortium. “Their legacy for the Amazon and the planet is undoubtedly immense,” adds Ane Alencar, IPAM’s Science Director.

The partnership between the Institute and the Foundation strengthens along with the gains for socio-biodiversity in each joint effort.
