Message from André Guimarães, executive director of IPAM, on the climate conference in Belém from November 10 to 21

The climate conference returns to Brazil strengthened after 32 years since the event that inaugurated the COPs around the world. Without them, we would be on course for a 4°C overheating of the planet’s average temperature – instead of the 2.8°C predicted according to the annual climate targets.

We should still preferably limit global warming to 1.5°C under the Paris Agreement. Even above that, every tenth of a degree matters. While wars of arms and tariffs are taking hold, climate change is getting worse and its effects are causing more and more extreme events with irreparable consequences.

It’s a delicate moment for life on Earth. It’s time for good ideas and new leaders to emerge, creatively, to guide us out of the climate emergency.

The hope we place in COP30 is hope in Brazil and in countries that remain committed to the climate agenda, especially in the Global South. In addition to Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Africa and China have already updated their Nationally Determined Contributions, showing alignment for a new journey.

COP30 opens the era of implementation and increased ambition, but also of harmony and the search for cooperation with a view to multilateralism. The new cycle, in the wake of Paris, will find in Belém the joint effort needed to move forward.

More than 160 countries will meet over the next few days with the mission of reflecting in the negotiations the commitments needed for a future aligned with the continuity of our life on the planet.

We at IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute) will be following everything closely, as representatives of Brazilian civil society and observers of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). Just as we’ve been doing for 30 years, sharing climate solutions designed with people and nature in mind.

We invite you to take part! See the schedule of events and join IPAM at COP30.
